A formal theory of electron diffraction by a crystal slab is developed using a Green's function formalism. The inner potential due to the occurrence of potential barriers at the crystal surfaces is also taken into account. Explicit expressions for the reflection and transmission amplitudes are obtained and a detailed comparison with Kambe's treatment of the problem is given.
