In writing out tensors which represent physical properties of crystals, it is customary to choose a Cartesian frame of reference which has a specific orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes. A new formulation is proposed in which the physical properties (in particular the piezoelectric property) of crystals can be specified without reference to any coordinate system.
