The optical spectra of Cr 3+ in single crystals of ScCl 3 and InCl 3 have been investigated between 7000 and about 31000 cm −1 . The observed crystal field splittings are explained in first approximation by a crystal potential of cubic symmetry. Further details in splitting of the quartet levels of Cr 3+ and of the triplet levels of V 3+ can be interpreted in both cases by a crystal potential of 3m(C 3V ) symmetry. The employed host lattices are of special interest, because the rare‐earth ions can occupy the same sites as the transition‐metal ions.
