The concentration dependence of the line shape in ruby is investigated experimentally at frequencies 9000, 11500 (crystal field splitting frequency), and 40000 MHz. Assumption of pure magnetic dipole‐dipole interaction does not explain the experimental results. The line broadening caused by quadrupole‐quadrupole interaction of spin states is calculated using a statistical theory. The calculated and experimental data are in good qualitative and quantitative agreement.
