The second‐order elastic constants of NaCl‐type alkali halides were calculated on the basis of Hooke's law. The calculations were performed using the Born‐Mayer model for the lattice energy of ionic solids. The results obtained show that contrary to expectations the Cauchy relations are not fulfilled.
