Applying many‐particle methods the lowest excitation energy of the exciton is calculated for an insulator with small energy gap. Screening is taken into account by means of a self‐consistent k ‐dependent screening function. At the finite critical gap G c the excitation energy vanishes leading to the excitonic phase.
