Sets of crystal field parameters are derived to describe the splittings of the 5 F', the 3 K' 8 , the 5 G' 6 , and the 5 G' 4,5 levels of Ho 3+ in YPO 4 separately. The differences of the A   2 0 〈 r 2 〉 parameter for different levels by a factor of about 20 are explained qualitatively by different shielding factors for electrons in different LS ‐states.
