The bonding in epitaxial bicrystals and its influence on their structural properties, assumed to be governed by lowest energy configurations, are considered. The Peierls‐Nabarro model for the interfacial interaction between two semi‐infinite crystals, used previously, is extended in Part I to include the second term in a Fourier series. This is believed to represent the true interaction more closely. Three approximate expressions for the energy are obtained, one of which is in the form of a useful analytical expression. In Part II the considerations are extended to thin films.
