A general formalism is developed by which it is possible to relate the correlation factor to the isotope effect and to calculate the correlation factor for impurity diffusion by monovacancies in systems having at least a twofold symmetry around the vacancy–solute jump direction. However, the formalism can be extended to more complicated systems. Some well known results are deduced easily from a general equation. The case of impurity diffusion in the two‐dimensional hexagonal lattice and in the three‐dimensional f.c.c. lattice is worked out completely.
