An impurity ion centre identified as Se − has been produced by irradiation with blue light at − 100°C in AgCl:Se, Cd. The p‐function containing the unpaired electron points along [100] crystal direction and the centre has orthorhombic symmetry (point group C 2v ). A hyperfine interaction of the unpaired electron with one 77 Se nucleus is observed. Apart from this an additional splitting of the lines indicates a strong superhyperfine interaction with two silver ions. A qualitative understanding of this structure can be obtained as follows: The ground state p z ( z parallel [100]) forms σ‐bonds with two Ag + ions on the z ‐axis of the centre.
