The strain dependence of the harmonic frequency distribution f (ω) has been investigated through third order using the Lagrangian strain parameters. The theory is applied to a crystal which interacts through a pair potential. In particular values for the strain coefficients are obtained for Mie‐Lennard‐Jones and Buckingham potentials. This work indicates that the shape of f (ω) changes significantly with strain and that the change is greater for shear strain than for simple expansion in agreement with earlier work.
