Abstract The thermopower of zone refined aluminium doped with copper and iron has been measured as a function of temperature and specimen thickness in the residual resistance range. It is shown that the size dependence can be used to separate the “scattering” contribution and the “density of states” contribution to the diffusion thermopower. The phonon drag thermopower is found to be different in the two alloys, while the “density of states” contribution is found to be in agreement with the free electron value.
