A comparison of electron‐ and neutron‐radiation damage in MgF 2 single crystals has been made by studying changes in the optical absorption. It is found that reactor irradiation introduces many more cluster centers than does electron irradiation. Annealing studies show that above 700 °K F‐centers are apparently mobile and aggregate to form M‐centers. Zero phonon and phonon‐assisted lines are observed at 382.6, 384.5, 385.7, and 387.3 nm and have been shown to be associated with the broad absorption band at 370 nm which is due to M‐centers.
