The spectral dependence of the refractive indices and birefringence of CdS x Se 1− x (including CdS and CdSe) single crystals has been investigated from the fundamental absorption edge up to the lattice vibration spectrum in the temperature interval 100 to 600 °K. In the region of v > 5000 cm −1 the measurements are carried out by the method of prism (with an absolute error for n of 5 × 10 −4 ), for v < 5000 cm −1 by the modified interference method (with an absolute error for n of 5 × 10 −3 , and for Δ n = n e − n o of (2 to 4) × 10 −5 ). The results are discussed.
