The theory of the sideband absorption of the U‐center is reformulated. The contribution of the anharmonic self‐energy of the local mode is taken into account in the resonance denominator and in the sideband absorption itself. The first modification explains some difficulties in describing peak positions and heights arising in the usual perturbation treatment. The second effect is a simple form of final state interaction which leads to an absorption in the gap region of the sideband. Numerical values of the effects are given.
