A group‐theoretical classification of the states of paramagnetic impurity ions is made taking into account charge transfer. The cases of an impurity ion in a spinel crystal and the first order pair of equivalent Cr 3+ ions in corundum are studied as examples. A group‐theoretical classification of the states of complexes of N impurity ions ( N = 2 to 4) is given. KMg(Co)F 3 is discussed as an example.
