The energy of an electronic state of a complex system, consisting of a number of interacting sub‐systems is considered by perturbation theory, the interaction of sub‐systems being taken as a perturbation. The energy of a system is calculated up to the second order and the wave function up to the first order. The application of perturbation theory is justified when in the expansions in terms of nonorthogonal functions of an overcomplete set the coefficients possess the minimum property.
