Complete dispersion relations of polaritons are given for biaxial and uniaxial crystals. In the limiting cases k → 0 and k → ∞ ( k wave vector) very general conclusions can be drawn concerning their frequencies and directions of polarization. For uniaxial crystals the polaritons are subdivided in ordinary and extraordinary ones with orientation independent or orientation dependent frequencies, respectively. The ordinary polaritons are of transverse type whereas extraordinary are of mixed transverse‐longitudinal type for a general orientation.
