Empirical relations for the emission energies ϵ of the F‐center in the Na, K, Rb, and Cs halides, and for the lifetimes τ have been established with the following forms:\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \varepsilon = A\,K_o^n $$\end{document} and\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \tau = A'K_o^{n'},$$\end{document} where K o is the optical dielectric constant. Two different relations appear to exist for τ. One follows from measurements of τ at liquid helium temperature, the other follows from τ extrapolated from measurements above liquid nitrogen temperature with the Swank‐Brown curve. The implications of the existence of these curves are discussed.
