Optical density and Faraday rotation measurements for the U 2 band in KCl, KBr, and KI are presented. The Faraday rotation measurements were performed at 43.1 and 48.8 kG. The results were analysed by the method of moments, for determining the spinorbit splitting of the first excited state. The computed values are Δ = − 0.234 eV for KCl, Δ = −0.179 eV for KBr, and Δ = −0.644 eV for KI. The pattern for the magnetic circular dichroism Δ f ( E ), as computed from the Faraday rotation, is also given.
