In this paper a new transient effect in the room‐temperature F‐colouring of NaCl is presented which occurs whenever a X‐ or γ‐irradiation is resumed after an interruption time where in the crystal remains in the dark. A detailed study of the characteristics of the effect is made and a relatively simple theoretical model is proposed to account for them. Essentially, the model is based on the existence of a thermally activated process consisting of the removal of free anion vacancies. The data on transient colouring permit to investigate the kinetics of that vacancy process and determine its activation energy (0.39 eV).
