The paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Gd 3+ in CdWO 4 is measured at 24 GHz at room temperature. The parameters of the spin Hamiltonian are determined by fitting of the angular dependence of the spectrum. The values of the zero‐field splitting of Gd 3+ and Mn 2+ in CdWO 4 and CaWO 4 are compared and an appropriate mechanism for explaining these values is discussed.
