The ultrasonic attenuation of unirradiated and neutron irradiated quartz is discussed in terms of recent theoretical formulations of the three‐phonon scattering mechanism. It is shown that the temperature dependence of the attenuation in the unirradiated quartz crystal can be understood by invoking this scattering mechanism. It is also shown that upon neutron irradiation the observed changes in the attenuation can be qualitatively understood by assuming that neutron irradiation decreases the thermal phonon lifetimes in the crystal.
