A general expression for the dielectric tensor induced by a light wave in the presence of a time‐dependent external electric field is given in terms of double‐time nonequilibrium Green's functions whose spectral representations are derived in the case of a static field. Neglecting field‐induced interband transitions, the poles of the one and two‐particle Green's functions for a Bloch electron in a static electric field are determined. The imaginary part of the dielectric function at the M 0 edge is calculated for a lattice with no centres of inversion symmetry.
