The local mode absorption in the infrared due to U‐centers in NaI has been measured. The ratio of local mode frequencies with H − and D − isotopes is 1.34. The main band shows a temperature‐dependent shift and broadening as well as a side band structure produced by local modeband mode coupling. The results are briefly discussed as arising from various anharmonic potential terms. There is no clear evidence from this experiment which shows directly the degree of perturbation of band‐mode phonons by the force constant change due to the defect.
