Characteristic energy‐loss measurements using thin aluminium foils are reported, which show a decrease in the energy hω of both types of surface plasmons in the forward scattering direction. The observed decrease in the energy of the ω + ‐branch supports the dispersion theory of surface plasmons, which predicts that the phase velocity ω/ k of both surface plasmon modes is less than c when retardation is taken into account.
