The field‐induced change in the intraband and interband parts of the complex dielectric function is calculated for the various types of critical points. The field‐induced change in the plasma frequency has a quadratic dependence on the field. Limits of validity for the effective mass approximation are given. The influence of collisions on the field‐induced change of the interband part of the dielectric function is dealt with.
