A pulse modulated magnetic field is used to study the paramagnetic relaxation in terbium ethyl sulphate. This method can be used to obtain two different types of disturbance of the thermal equilibrium between the spin‐system and the phonons. It is seen that there are different relaxation functions and different dependences of the measured (effective) relaxation time T eff on the magnitude of the initial disturbance for both of these types of disturbance. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory of paramagnetic relaxation which includes the phonon bottleneck.
