Previous experimental and theoretical work on instabilities of the electric current have been mostly limited to various special cases. A better approach would be to treat the problem generally in terms of phenomenological non‐equilibrium thermodynamics. This would lead to some general conclusions which would be independent of the microphysical origin of the instabilities. It is shown here that even the restricted approach of taking the electric field as the thermodynamic force yields some general results of this nature which provide new information on this problem.
