Calculations of characteristic energy losses of electrons in thin dielectric foils are given for a) electrons with inclined incidence to the foil, b) electrons travelling parallel to the foil surface. Retardation is taken into account for case b) in the limit of very thick foils. For the special case in which the dielectric behaves as a free electron gas, excitation probabilities and dispersion relations are deduced for bulk and surface plasmons.
