A one‐electron quantum‐mechanical formula for the low‐field Hall effect is derived for an ac electric and dc magnetic field. A comparison is made between the adiabatic and stationary approach to this problem. With some simplifying assumptions the formula is applied to two simple density‐of‐states models and the results indicate that the sign of the Hall effect depends on the degree of filling of the bands.
