The absorption coefficient of In 2 Se is investigated experimentally near the band edge using polarized radiation. The selection rules for the space group D   2 h 12to which In 2 Se belongs are determined by group‐theoretical methods. An energy‐band model is proposed which agrees with the experimental data.
