The Procopiu effect for a cylindrical ferromagnetic specimen fixed at one end, involves the induction of an e.m.f. in a search coil surrounding the specimen when a constant longitudinal magnetic field H y and an oscillatory circumferential magnetic field H x are applied simultaneously. It is shown that the shape of the e.m.f. induced in this form of the Procopiu effect differs from that occuring with the same specimen fixed at both ends. Using a constant amplitude for H x , a study is made of the dependence of the effect upon H y and upon the phase relations between H x and the torsional oscillations induced by magnetostriction.
