A study is made of the effect fo electron‐phonon and electron‐impurity scattering on the field‐induced change in the optical interband absorption for photon energies near the direct band gap ℏ ω 0 . It is found that in the presence of collisions the exponential tail of the absorption coefficient at ω < ω 0 oscillates and that the oscillations at ω > ω 0 are damped. This damping seems to be in quantitative agreement with the experimental results of Hamakawa, Germano and Handler [4].
