Abstract The fracture characteristics of sodium chloride single crystals containing cadmium additions have been determined as a function of heat treatment and testing temperature. Precipitate particles reduce the fracture stress and strain at testing temperatures below −50°C. The results are related to other recent investigations into the mechanics of cleavage fracture in brittle solids.
