A study is made of EPR, optical absorption (in the range 2 to 6 eV) and density variation of LiF crystals that have been irradiated in a reactor with doses up to 10 19 neutrons/cm 2 . In the irradiated crystals the main paramagnetic defects are F‐centres. Some conclusions are drawn as to irradiation‐induced expansion processes and the formation of colour centres. Some details of the aggregation process of F‐centres are clarified by thermal annealing of the irradiated crystals.
