The magnetic properties of Ce, Pr, and Nd monochalcogenides are studied over a wide temperature range. The magnetic measurements at elevated temperatures show that the 4f electrons of metal ions are localized and their number is equal to that of the free tripositive metal ions. At low temperatures all the compounds investigated exhibit magnetic ordering except PrSe and PrTe. The possible types of magnetic ordering, and a mechanism for the exchange interaction, are discussed.
