A comparison is made between the van der Woude‐Dekker and Wegener models describing the effect of relaxation on the Mössbauer line shape. It is shown that both models lead to indentical basic formulae for the Mössbauer spectrum in terms of autocorrelation functions of the atomic spin. The approximation for short ion spin correlation times is discussed using a more general method than that used by Wegener.
