The second order density response to a scalar external potential is calculated for a system of identical particles, applying the techniques of temperature‐dependent Green's functions developed by Kadanoff and Baym. The general expressions for the quadratic density response and the second order contribution to the effective potential can be simplified for a highly degenerate electron gas.
