Abstract Fine grained, Ferrovac iron has been found to deform in a discontinuous manner when tested in tension at 4.2 °K. The deformation has been found to be a unique continuous twinning process which is initiated by a critical stress of 137000 psi and from which a uniform strain energy release of 0.01 eV/mol for each twinning event has been calculated. The characteristics of this twinning deformation are discussed and comparisons with other reported low temperature phenomena are made.
