An expression for the ground‐state energy of a metal is obtained, using many‐body theory and the pseudo‐potential method. Hence, using spectroscopic data, the cohesive energy, lattice constant and compressibility of Cu are calculated. The good agreement obtained between these results and experiment facilitates the complete explanation of cohesion in noble metals by the metallic bonding of the conduction electrons.
