At high rates of deposition the oblique‐incidence anisotropy is similar to that known in NiFe films. At low rates of deposition a different dependence on the angle of incidence is found. Measurements of elastic stresses and structural studies by means of dichroic effects show that the anomalous anisotropy is also connected with stray‐field effects, however, the orientations of elongated defects responsible for the anisotropy are substantially different at high and low rates of deposition. The dependence of both magnetic and the optical anisotropies indicates the importance of the effects of surface roughness.
