Spectral studies are made of the Co ++ ion site symmetry in LiCl and KBr host lattices. It is found that in LiCl and KBr the Co ++ ion symmetry is octahedral and tetrahedral respectively. This conclusion is supported by a comparison with CoCl 2 , Cs 3 CoCl 5 , and Cs 2 CoBr 4 spectra. More detailed structures are found in the spectrum of a RbClCo(Zn)Cl 2 sample as compared with those exhibited by RbClCo ++ single crystals grown from melt.
