A group theoretical analysis of Stark effect measurements in KCl:Ag + is reported. The irreducible representations of the excited states are determined assuming that the electronic transitions associated with the four measured absorption bands arise from the same ground state singlet, and that the Ag + ‐centre has O h ‐symmetry. The results can be understood qualitatively by considering the Ag + Cl 6 − ‐complex in terms of MO theory.
