The LCAO approximation is used to study the effects of s‐p hybridization on the band structure of a linear chain in the presence of a localized perturbation. Bound states normally appear at the centre and at the edge of the Brillouin zone; but sometimes hybridization will introduce an intermediary minimum in the band structure and a perturbation will make a bound state leave the band at the minimum. The symmetries of the bound states are examined. The hybrid character of the self‐trapped hole in the V K centre is analysed in this way.
