Abstract Previous papers concerning the hysteresis loops in the microstrain region have shown disagreement regarding the conditions under which closed hysteresis loops can be observed. The present paper shows that the explanation of this matter lies in the experimental procedure rather than in the type of material used. An investigation is also made of the physical meaning of the derivative of the dependence of hysteresis loop area on strain amplitude.
