A new theroretical treatment based on a proper linearization of the basic non‐linear system, is given for the photovoltaic effect in a photoconductor‐dielectric‐metal structure. Particular attention is paid to the conditions under which such a linear approach is valid, and the possible generalization of the approximation (metal‐photoconductor with anomalous photovoltage) is discussed. The complicated overall effects of the interfacial barrier structure are adequately described by proper phenomenological parameters. The formula for the Dember effect and the physical interpretation of anomalous photovoltaic effects are critically compared with the results of the preceeding theories.
