Abstract Employing a torsion pendulum, internal friction peaks are found in platinum (99.99% purity) and nickel (99.999% and 99.88% purity) following cold work at room temperature. These peaks are identified with stage III recovery. The value of τ 0 associated with the dominant nickel peak is examined critically. Calculations of entropy changes and attempt frequencies lead to three possibilities for the relaxation process.
