A theory of the energy bands and mobility of H 3 O + ions in ice crystals is presented. The mobility is determined by the second order processes which involve the emission of one phonon and the absorption of another phonon. The proton‐phonon interactions are rather complicated because of the narrowness of the ion bands. The variation principle is applied to the Boltzmann equation to derive the mobility.
