The photochemical effects of uv irradiation on ZnS single crystals are investigated. The crystals are exposed to short‐wavelength uv irradiation, in both high vacuum and a water vapour atmosphere. Certain crystals show weak photochemical decomposition even when irradiated in vacuum. An analysis of the experimental results shows that this is due to the water molecules, bound to the Cl or ZnCl 2 in the surface layers of the crystal. For the case of crystals irradiated in water vapour, studies are made of the degree of darkening as a function of irradiation time, also the dispersion of darkening on the crystal surface, and bleaching effects, are studied.
